One of the first things you have to identify when looking for hockey skates is the shape of your foot. What this means is really just how wide your foot might be since the vast majority of hockey skates favor either the wide foot or the narrow foot but rarely both in the same model. You will need to decide which width is right for you when you try on skates, these are typically designated as widths D, R, E, EE or W. It's not easy to choose a skate by judging your regular shoes since the stress on your feet varies when skating vs. walking. The best way to really know what skates are right for your feet is to really try them out on the ice.
It's a good idea to create a budget you can live with when buying hockey skates. While you don't have to buy professional grade skates, especially if you're a beginner or intermediate player, you want to be sure that you get skates that are good enough to allow you to play well and improve your game. You should be able to find adequate skates for an adult at around $100. While high performance skates that are used by skilled players can cost several hundreds of dollars most beginners do perfectly well with the less expensive variety. Don't blow all your budget on skates as you are going to need a few other high ticket protective gear as well. Finally, finding the perfect pair of skates is one of your most important challenges as a player, especially if you aren't familiar with the brand you like the most. Try tons of skates if that's what it takes, don't be afraid to ask questions whenever you need to. If you are looking for a durable stick, forget about these graphite, or composite sticks, as they snap like toothpicks when they get tapped, lifted by opposing players when trying to steal the puck away, or shooting one-timers off a pass.
There are several models of wood stick models that have stood the test of time. CCM, and Sherwood sticks are the best. Not as expensive as the composite sticks, but a lot more durable, and they are quite capable of "whipping" or "snapping" the puck as well as a composite stick.
To measure the correct size, you can measure the stick by standing the stick updright, with the blade on the ground. There are two ways the stick can be measured. If you are on skates, the butt end should come up to just under your chin. If you are standing in sock feet, or no skates, the butt end should come up to just under your nose.
This is standard measuring methods, however, it depends also on the type of player. Some players like a longer stick for reach, and defensive capabilities (normally defensemen), and forwards who like to shoot a lot like a shorter than normal stick in order to improve puck handling manuevers, and to be able to keep the puck closer to their bodies when shooting.
If you cannot find a stick that exactly measures to the "nose and chin" rule, a wooden stick can be cut down to a proper size. However, when doing this if possible find a stick as close as you can to the height you need, so there will be no need to remove a significant length of the shaft. If you remove too much of the shaft to make it the right length, the stick may become "bottom heavy" and throw off the balance of the stick.
