Which type of guitar should i get (PLEASE HELP)?

I am thinking about buying either the fender american vintage 70s stratocaster or some kind of gibson sg, which do you think best suits the music i like to ply, i play The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Steve Miller Band, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Chuck Berry, Deep Purple, Cream, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Mountain, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath,.... etc mostly classic and hard rock.

A strat is going to give you that bright single-coil sound... an SG is going to give you a much darker, "humbucker" sound - typically more drive/ mids - less top end.

Let's analyze. From your list...

Primary Stratocaster "Single Coil" Artists/Bands
- Stones
- Steve Miller
- Deep Purple
- Pink Floyd: David Gilmour mostly played a strat, although he can also be seen with P90 les pauls

Primary Humbucker(Gibson) Artists/Bands
- Who
- Led Zep (sort of - see below)
- AC/DC (All SGs, all the time)
- Chuck Berry (ES-335/345)
- Cream (Although Clapton is known for his Strat work - in Cream he recorded with a Les Paul and/or 335
- Alice Cooper
- Mountain
- Black Sabbath

Both:(Depending on the Tune)
- Beatles . Lennon played an Epi Casino w/ P90 (single coil) , They played Gretsch Country Gentlemen, Harrison played a strat on occassion, but also Les Pauls, 335s, etc. It runs the gambit

- Led Zep: Page often played a Dan Electro baritone (single coil) - and did a lot of solos on Telecasters and other single coil guitars. The solo on "Stairway to Heaven" was recorded with a Tele but he played it on his famous 1275 (SG) Doubleneck live.
- Who : Townsend also played a lot of Teles and Strats on various tracks

A couple other considerations -
If you want to imitate the Pink Floyd David Gilmour, (as well as some of the others you list) sound you will need a whammy bar. The Gibson "vibrola" horizontal whammies on early SGs are terrible, so your only other option is a Bigsby tailpiece (also pretty terrible). So here - the strat-style whammy or better yet, a Floyd Rose style locking whammy is your best bet.

You're not stuck with just the single-single-single setup of classic strats. And you're not stuck wth just a 2-humbucker SG either

Based on what you want to do - maximum versatility - I would go for either:

1) A Strat with a humbucker in the bridge position that can be split back to single coil. That gives you the best of both tonal worlds - gives you a whammy, and will be very versatile. . This configuration is often listed as a "HSS" strat. Humbucker-Single-Single and if you get it from Fender (or even Squier) - I believe the humbucker is already set up with a splitter. You can also re-wire it so instead of the two single-coils being stuck in parallel - you an wire them so they switch to series and will work +/- like a humbucker.

2) An SG with coil splitters on both pickups so you can switch between single-coil and humbucker. It won't sound exactly like a strat - but close enough when you need it to. You'll need to deal with an after-market whammy like a Bigsby - not perfect but workable. (SGs are too thin to mount a Floyd Rose trem - it would punch completely through the body.

BTW - I used this exact configuration (with no trem - just a hard tail tune-o-matic bridge) for 10 yrs covering top-40. Very versatile, you can do Stones, Steve Miller - whatever.

3) A better choice than 2) if you want the whammy might be a Les-Paul body style with the split pickups - you can mount a floating tremelo on a Les Paul (check out the Alex Lifeson Les Paul Axxess)
